When Young House Love posted this about glass etching, I promptly added etching creme to my mile-long (just kidding, but seriously, we're on a strict budget and my mom spoils me) Christmas list of things to have my mom buy me so I didn't have to buy them for myself. And as expected, she came through!
Armed with YHL's instructions, I set out to make a gift for my sister's 21st birthday. I found a $4 pitcher at Ross - made for beer most likely, but I thought it would be good for margaritas.
You guys - my mom is awesome - she reads my blog (as does the whole fam! thanks!) and knows of my crafty fantasies. She got me not just one Xacto knife - but a whole freaking set. With it's own special box. With replacement blades. ahhhhhhhh........
I completely used YHL's steps - but here are pictures of my pathetic attempt anyway! I too used painter's tape for my stencil - although mine was totally old and had lost some of it's stickiness. So better tape would have helped - I had a bit of bleeding.
I waited about 5 minutes - and it was starting to eat the tape edges - and it was super stinky!! But it definitely etched! Not as much as I would have liked, but it still turned out pretty cute!
Anyone etched anything fun lately?? I've got some cream to use!
Oh, I'm almost convinced. I saw this pyrex dish and want to make one for everyone I know getting married this year's bridal showers (it's the summer of weddings for my girlfriends - and I have a kid. Outcast anyone?). Anyway, back to etching. I totally want to try, but when I tried to make ornaments with paint using a similar method I had major issues. But I'm tempted. Here's the link to what I want to copy: http://homemadebyjill.blogspot.com/2011/01/insulated-casserole-carriers.html
ReplyDeleteOh, and I got so caught up in me me me that I forgot to tell you I LOVE the pitcher. And that's a perfect 21st birthday gift!

This looks like a lot of fun! I think I'm going to have to try it sometime. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI second Emily's link. That's on my list for the month.
ReplyDeleteHow cool!
ReplyDeleteThat was very sweet of your mom, and I love that your family reads your blog. :)
It turned out great! I think maybe the thickness and composition of the glass has something to do with how well/fast it etches, too. I etched Bath and Body candles for Christmas and I left the etching cream on for like 15 minutes and it still didn't etch well.
